TRAVEL INFO:
There are 3 major airports into the NYC area – JFK, Newark Liberty (EWR) and LaGuardia (LGA). Find the best deal that suits you. Certain airlines have better deals, and more direct flights into each airport. For example, Newark-Liberty is a United hub and often has better deals. JFK has a JetBlue and Delta hub. Find the deal that works best for you. Try a site like Kayak to compare.
Mass transit is available from all airports. Depending on the time of day, mass transit is also your best option. Look for the AirTran at the airport. You can take this to the subway at JFK or the LIRR and commute into New York Penn Station. From Newark (EWR), you can take the AirTran to NJ transit, which also brings you to New York Penn Station. These options are under $20pp. A car service from JFK and EWR can cost $75-100, so plan accordingly. Shuttles are also available, but I would book those ahead. From LaGuardia (LGA), sometimes a car or taxi can be the best and quickest option. LGA is closer to the city, so the cost can be lower. Still expect about $40-50 for that ride. Mass transit is also available via AirTran to subway.
Hotel selection is your choice. We suggest looking around the Times Square, Midtown West/East, Hell’s Kitchen area. Some hotels people have stayed at in the past include The Row (700 8th Ave), the Belvedere (319 W 48th), The Gotham (16 E 46th). But use hotels.com or booking.com to find what’s best in your budget. Reach out to me or your fellow attendees for any suggestions or comparisons as well. If you don’t mind taking a subway or taxi, you can also stay out of the circle of tourist hell aka the Times Square area and travel towards that area. Also, keep in mind that events can be spread over the city. So staying in midtown isn’t necessarily a requirement. Also, if you have a few people in your group, might be worth it to look into an AirBNB. You can see how the New Yorkers live. It’s quite fascinating.
If you plan to be there for a few days, and you’re not afraid of the subway, that’s a great way to get around. Here’s a subway map. Use the MTA Trip Planner available at mta.info. You can grab a 7-day unlimited card for $33. Each one-way ride is $3 so it’ll pay itself off if you use the subway most of the time. Given the time of day, the streets can back up, so going underground is a great option. Taxis and Uber are also available for you. I used to be all about Ubers, but Taxis can be more readily available for the same price. So don’t be afraid to flag one down. Just make sure their numbers are lit up on the top of the cab. That’s how you know it’s free.
We’ll keep your days pretty busy, but there’s always room in between to stop for a drink or have dinner on your own. Wander into a pub. Grab a slice. But for the LOVE OF GOD, whatever you do, DO NOT eat at a chain restaurant. NYC is one of the culinary hubs of the world. Use Yelp. Google “must eat in NYC.” Ask us for advice. Anything. Please! Maybe save your Italian dinner for our group dinner on Saturday night.
As always, reach out if you have any more questions.
